Today is Sweetest Day. I have never heard of this holiday but it has been around for over 80 years. And this holiday is not about giving chocolate or candy to people although candy was actually involved in the beginnings of Sweetest Day.
How Sweetest Day happened is that 87 years ago, a Cleveland candy store owner brought a candy treat to orphans, the elderly and the homebound on the third Saturday of October. It became a tradition and it caught on and then became a holiday. But as it became a holiday people started thinking it was about buying chocolate or candy for your loved one. Actually, Sweetest Day is about doing nice things for people, it's not supposed to be extravagant. So go out and commit a random act of kindness, maybe you can do some grocery shopping for a senior person, bring soup to someone who's been sick or perhaps help to babysit for a frazzled single Mom, look around in your own neighborhood and see who might need a visit or some help, that's how you celebrate Sweetest Day.
